    FAQ's: RedTop fly trap

What is the RedTop fly trap?

It is a trap specially designed to capture flies in outdoor spaces such as gardens, swimming pools, terraces and even in industrial or livestock facilities where the presence of flies is a problem in the hot months.

Why is the RedTop fly trap useful?

Flies can be a real nuisance at any time of the year, but they are especially so during the summer months when they invade our homes, farms, smallholdings and stables.

The RedTop trap is, a unique, safe and effective product for the control of adult flies. It  is an economical, non-toxic system with no dangerous chemicals and is easy to use.

Does the RedTop fly trap contain toxic products?

One of the main virtues of this trap is the absence of insecticides and other toxic products for people, animals and plants.

Simply use water and a powerful attractant fly bait formulated with fishmeal, powdered egg and sugar.

Its great efficiency and safety make the RedTop trap an ideal product for creating a fly-free environment during the warm months of the year, when flies proliferate in gardens, terraces and other outdoor facilities.

How long does the RedTop fly trap take to work?

They work in a matter of days. Elevated temperatures speed up its activation.

After 2-3 days from its installation, the flies will begin to enter the trap, becoming trapped without being able to get out and dying inside.

How does the RedTop fly trap work?

They use a non-toxic protein-based bait that strongly lures flies through a turret into a trap from which they cannot escape.

About 85% of the flies caught in the trap are female. Controlling the females can control the entire population of flies in the area. Once trapped, the flies cannot escape and cannot develop immunity to the bait.

How long does the effect of the RedTop fly trap last?

The trap is effective for several weeks, and can go up to 12 weeks, depending on the fill level of the catches and the maintenance of the water levels inside. To always have traps with the highest level of attraction, it is important to remove traps with a very high catch fill level.

In the event of significant evaporation of the trap content, a little water can be added to maintain the correct level inside.

For which users is the RedTop fly trap indicated?

Red Top Flycatchers are ideal for both home and professional use. They should be located a maximum of 10-15 meters away from your home, farm or business premises to keep flies away from the premises and attract them to the trap.

What are the steps to use the RedTop Fly Trap?

Installing the trap is very simple. These are the simple steps to follow for its proper installation:

    • Remove the red cap and unfold the bag.
    • Extend the mesh cone and make sure the hole at its apex is open.
    • Add the bait and a liter of warm water, preferably without chlorine. If the water contains chlorine, let it stand for 24 hours before using it.
    • Replace the red cap by fitting the tabs on the red cap into the small holes in the cap.
    • Hang the trap outside, in a suitable place with sufficient sunlight. Place the trap about 10m from the area in which you want to avoid the presence of flies.

Where should the RedTop fly trap be installed?

The trap must always be hung outside and in a suitable place, both to ensure its effectiveness and avoid causing discomfort to the people in the environment to be protected.

It is important to place the trap at a height of about 2 meters from ground level and in a place with direct sunlight in temperate climates and in semi-shade in very hot climates.

It is recommended to install it at a minimum distance of 10 meters from inhabited areas but close to the place where the flies are located (maximum 5 meters away from the areas where the flies are present).

How should the RedTop fly trap be disposed of once it is full?

When the trap has finished its activity due to being full of flies, you can discard it by following the instructions below:

    • Cut the bag with a sharp instrument and drain it on a compost heap or a hole in the garden (dead flies are rich in nutrients and make good compost).
    • Or, place the trap in a bag and dispose of it in a suitable waste container.

In order to achieve a continuous capture of flies and create a pest-free environment, it is very important to prepare a new trap 3-4 days before removing the trap to be replaced.
