The use of pheromones has become an aid for the most visionary pig producers. They do not only have many advantages, but they also facilitate the insemination process.

    PHEROMONES

Pheromones are chemical substances that are secreted and that have an influence on the behaviour of animals of the same species. In the case of pigs, pheromones are detected through the olfactive membranes and the vomeronasal organ. BSTIM is a group of synthetic hormones that imitate the pheromones found in the saliva of boars and whose role is to activate the sexual response of the sow.

Androstenone (the pheromone contained in BSTIM) is a natural component responsible for the stimulation of the sexual response in sows, before and after the natural service or artificial insemination. BSTIM has been developed to help farmers to optimise the breeding process. BSTIM helps in the increase in the annual productivity of sows. It facilitates oestrus synchronisation and it reduces the number of empty days. Empty days and undetected heats entail a cost overrun unwanted by farmers, because they imply greater feed and space costs. In summary, the use of BSTIM leads to a rise in the breeder’s financial competitiveness and an improvement for a more homogeneous production.

    ADVANTAGES

    Without a boar

    • Two sprayings of BSTIM must be applied on the sow’s snout, therefore replacing the presence of the boar. The sow will react exactly in the same way as with the mounting test, as it would do with the boar.

    Lower expenses

    • BSTIM helps to reduce the losses of semen during the insemination, improving the response of the reproductive tract. In other words, it works as a stimulus.

    Quick oestrus

    • Gilts can be stimulated so they come into heat more quickly by using BSTIM, with two sprayings on the snout in the morning and 2 more sprayings in the evening. Besides, if a group of gilts is treated at the same time with BSTIM, the probability of their heats becoming synchronized increases.

    Calming effect

    • BSTIM also has calming properties for gilts, therefore facilitating their first insemination.

    Agresiveness

    • BSTIM plays an important role in the reduction of aggressiveness in gilts.

    Stimulating

    • The application of BSTIM stimulates the appearance of oestrus in gilts and shows. This includes the stimulation of the gilts, so they reach puberty. In both cases this is of help for the worker, so they can detect heats more efficiently.

    Empty days

    • Improvement in fertility as a result of the reduction of empty days. We must also add the benefit of the stimulation of the sexual response during the insemination. Lastly, it is worth bearing in mind the evidence that synthetic pheromones offer a significant aid at detecting oestrus during the problematic summer season.

    Biosecurity

    • The use of BSTIM facilitates good practices in terms of hygiene, reducing the spreading of diseases. Besides, difficulties such as stress or the Seasonal Infertility Syndrome (SIS) in the sows are reduced or even removed.

    USES

    Sows

    • For a successful insemination a correct detection of the oestrus cycle of the sow is essential. During proestrus, the sow becomes restless and emits characteristic grunts when the product BSTIM is applied on her. Nevertheless, she resists the mounting test. During this stage the sow is reaching oestrus, but she is not ready yet. In the evening or the next morning, the sow should be starting her oestrus, so she will be more still, allowing other sows to touch her, and the standing reflex will be reached when stimulating her loin, moving her tail to facilitate the boar’s access. This stage is marked as “Stage 0”, and it is the optimal moment for natural mounting, but with artificial insemination 12-24 hours are let go by to carry out the first application. This moment is the peak of the oestrus, when the sow may be touched without the need of any aid with pheromones. The second insemination is carried our 12 hours later.

    Gilts

    • In gilts, the first insemination is administered 12 hours after “Stage 0”, and the second one 12 hours after the first one. In sows, the first insemination is administered 24 hours after “Stage 0”, and the second one 12 hours after the first one.

    Weaning

    • After weaning, BSTIM can be used on day 2, with two sprayings on the snout in the morning and two more sprayings in the evening. This treatment can be repeated until the oestrus is reached. It will be applied for 4 days at the most.

    Gilts

    • Gilts can be stimulated so they come into heat more quickly by using BSTIM: 2 applications on the snout in the morning and 2 more applications in the evening. Also, if a group of gilts is treated with BSTIM at the same time, there is an increase in the probability that their oestruses become synchronised. By doing this for 4 days all the group will be synchronised, and it is extremely useful for future reproductive cycles. Lastly, BSTIM also has calming properties for the gilts, therefore facilitating their first insemination. BSTIM plays an important role in the reduction of aggressiveness in prepuberal gilts.
